Institutes & Courses

Since our founding, CSBR has been a leading convenor of Institutes and Courses to advance critical thinking, intersectional analysis, and creative organizing tactics for a holistic approach to sexual and bodily rights as human rights across our regions, and beyond.

Our flagship program, the CSBR Sexuality Institute, ran from 2008-2017. Designed as a comprehensive curriculum on sexuality, sexual and reproductive health and rights with an in-depth discussion on the linkages between research and practice, the Sexuality Institute offered a holistic interdisciplinary program combining history, theory, research and politics of sexuality with applications of advocacy and fieldwork.

After undertaking an evaluation of the Sexuality Institute, and engaging in extensive discussions and outreach, CSBR has since co-developed and supported our Members and Networkers to launch a number of new courses tailored to meet specific community needs.

In 2019, this includes by example:

  • Digital Storytelling Workshops – 5 day in-person trainings (also offered online), to equip activists with the basic knowledge, skills and tools to understand the power of storytelling, and to craft digital stories for their community building, organizing and advocacy.
  • Integrated Security and Holistic Well-Being – 5 day in-person trainings that explore how activists can build conceptual clarity, learn strategies, and develop personal and organizational practices to address well-being, for feminist and LGBTIQ activists advocates.
  • Self and Collective Care Workshops: In person and online workshops that address varying aspects of self and collective care for activists, including conceptual clarity, different healing and well-being practices, and tips and tools to support emotional, physical and spiritual well-being.
  • Befriending the Quran – Online spaces for textual engagement and community building, specifically for queer Muslims across Asia and Africa.
  • Gender, Sexuality, Islam and Science – Online reading and discussion based course interlinking religion and science, for all advocates interested in these intersections.
